Academia Meets Action: CUHK & Raleigh Train Guardians to Protect Lantau Mountain Camp
“Regenerating the Landscape of Lantau Mountain Camp: Co-creative Architectural Restoration and Natural Conservation Through Participatory Initiatives” is a project funded by the Lantau Conservation Fund. It exemplifies the integration of academic research, community participation, and environmental protection. The team will continue to enhance conservation efforts, including further restoration of historical structures, improving ecological monitoring, and conducting public education programs designed to raise awareness about the irreplaceable value of Lantau Mountain Camp and inspire collective efforts to safeguard this unique cultural and natural heritage.
This interdisciplinary initiative brings together experts in architecture, ecology, and cultural studies (The team) to document and examine the historical buildings, cultural landscape, and biodiversity along Section 2 of the Lantau Trail. The team developed a comprehensive conservation management plan based on thorough research to guide the sustainable development of Lantau Mountain Camp.
One of the project’s key achievements was the restoration of the caretaker’s Hut, which now serves as a base for conservation activities. In collaboration with Raleigh International Hong Kong, the project trained a group known as “Conservation Guardians”. These guardians assist to conduct ecological surveys and visitor impact assessment along the surrounding trails, and to staff the hut regularly to educate visitors about the unique history and cultural significance of Lantau Mountain Camp while promoting environmental awareness. Their involvement strengthens community engagement in conservation and fosters long-term stewardship of the site.
